Community Health Provider Hui

We received this exciting email yesterday.

"I read about your product earlier on in the month and remember thinking 'how awesome' for our rangatahi so I thought I'd take this opportunity to congratulate you all!

We are having a Community Health Provider Hui in October (3/4 at Kutarere Marae) where all our affiliates come together for either training workshops and/or information sharing. We will have a mix of doctors, nurses, community workers and rongoa Maori people. We think that your DVD project is innovative and exciting and we'd like to invite you and your team to present it to our hui if possible? Lots of our health professionals in the NZ Workforce are from another country so it could become a valuable resource locally, regionally and nationally."

Blast Conference!

What a Blast! Regan, Marketing Director here to tell you about the Blast Conference for 2007.

The conference was hosted by former TV presenter Susan Wood. The speakers included Michael Hill, Don Ha, the million dollar horse man, John Hart and many more… We were greatly inspired by their success stories and what they had to do to achieve their ultimate vision. They are true
entrepreneurs. Don Ha set us a challenge, if we made 1 million dollars in ten years he would give us a further 10% - talk about motivating! Guess who Samantha and I shook hands with?! Yup, you guessed it. The Prime Minister Helen Clark herself. It was a very nerve-racking experience meeting all these inspirational people but an experience I shall never forget. I hope to attend next year's Blast Conference. Thanks to the Blast coordinators!

Kia Ora
Regan and I attended the 2007 Blast Conference in Rotorua. It was the most inspirational event that I have ever, ever, ever attended in my life. In fact, it was so inspiring that I now believe that I can achieve whatever I want, whenever I want. Michael Hill, the Michael Hill Jeweller man, made me see that anything is possible, even if you are not the brightest spark on this planet. People believed that he would not come to anything important; especially his uncle. Look at him today; a very large chain of jewellery shops, a famous private golf course and he has become a household name. The next speaker was Don Ha...the man who bought that gorgeous two million dollar horse. Wow! he was hilarious. Even though he had the whole language barrier to get over, he made a name for himself in the real estate business! The other speakers which were very inspirational to me were Diane Foreman, The "Croucher Beer" guys, and the man from Bacardi who bought 42 Below.

The most informative speaker, in my opinion, was John Hart, the All Black's coach and the former Warriors coach. Being the Managing Director he taught me so much that a leader must know. His passion for rugby is enormous; the way he recalled his happy memories was amazing. His success is all because of his leadership qualities and his passion for the number one sport in New Zealand.

One speaker that completely caught me off guard was Geoff Knight, the Opera Singer who used to be a bikie. His journey to becoming what he is today is definitely inspiring. Basically, he showed me that you may as well pursue your dreams even if you believe you cannot make it for you may be wrong. You are your worst critic, especially when it is something you are very passionate about. Now, I am thinking of pursuing a career in the music industry for I believe I can make it. Thank you Geoff Knight for the amazing recount of your amazing experiences.

One more thing I must add is the fact that the Prime Minister, Helen Clark, spoke at the conference. I must say, she was a delight. I couldn't believe that I was in the same room as her. Regan and I waited patiently for her to come out of the hall so we could get her to keep our badge and get her to take a photo with it on. I basically became starstruck when I was about to speak. "Hello, I am Samantha Webb from Kei Te Pai. We were wondering if you could wear this badge and let us take a photo of you?" Then she said "Why sure... why not (I think)." Then I said, "That was a great speech by the way",... then everything was completely blank! I got to shake her hand and get a photo with her! We also got a photo with most of the other speakers too. It's a good way to market our product that's for sure!

Ohope Trade Fair

It was an early start, Saturday 4th of August, for us Kei Te Pai members, all awake, dressed and eagerly waiting at 6 am in the morning for our voyage to the Ohope Markets, where we were to participate in the official YES Trade Fair. We were the only YES group outside on this cold rainy day but we were prepared for the worst. Our stall looked awesome we had our product well presented and created the true Marae enviroment (we made our gazebo appear as a Marae, we even allowed a neigbouring stall move in when the rain came down. True Whanau Whanau).

Matthew and Alicia were dressed in traditional Kapa Haka costumes/piupius and bodice to resemble Tama our cartoon animation. We spent three hours split into pairs taking on different roles eg. walking around, approaching and selling our product to random people at the Market. "I was so nervous, talking to complete strangers but I had such pride in our product it was bearable" ,"It was a lot of fun, and definately worth doing again." Images will be available at a later date also we do not know the results of the Trade Fair but will keep you posted.

Animation

Hey, Co-Production Manager Logan of Kei Te Pai here.

Last Friday I visited and talked to Lawrence Pook from Te Whare Wanaga O Awanuiarangi, he works there as a Media Tutor. He showed me, free of charge, on their Mac computers how to transport a movie document into Flash and a PowerPoint document play as a movie in Flash also how to set the size of the image so it is viewable on a TV screen and some other helpful tips that we could use on our DVD. So thanks to Lawrence for giving up his time to help us out it was much appreciated.

Meeting at 1XX

Hey, it is me, Samantha. Last Friday during JAM CatchUp Day, I went to 1XX in Whakatane to meet with Glenn Smith to discuss our advertisement. First of all we discussed the jingle which Alicia and I had written for the More FM competition. Unfortunately I did not have the copy which I had printed out earlier. Luckily, I knew it off by heart because I was to record the jingle that day. I sang it to Glenn Smith and he liked it. He said that it was "catchy" which is what we really wanted.

We also discussed when we would like the jingle to be played. Seeing as we have to wind up Kei Te Pai in October, mass sales would have to take place during August so I decided that it would be more appropriate to play the jingle during that month.

After that I was directed to the newsroom. I had to answer a few questions about Young Enterprise and our company then suddenly I was whisked off to the actual studio to talk to Richard live on air! I was soooooo nervous but he went through the questions first before the song ended. Suddenly we were live on air and he was bombarding me with the questions he had briefed me on earlier. Luckily I knew the right answers so I wasn't uming too much. Then out of the blue he asked me this question which seems so simple but at the time, it was so complex. "So Samantha, would you do this experience all over again?" I hesitated quite a bit then said "ahhhh maybe? oh definitely uhhh yeah I would". Luckily the interview was over within a blink of an eye.

After that, I dawdled towards the recording studio to record the jingle. Matt took me into the recording booth to obviously record the jingle. I went through it once to make sure the sound was good then when it came to actually recording it I choked (not literally) then I forgot the words. I tried it three times, and then when I noticed Matt was looking a bit annoyed I suddenly forgot the words. When I finally got it right the jingle was too long! However, I quickened the pace and got it together. Suddenly my visit to 1XX was over.

I would like to thank everyone at 1XX for being so cool. On behalf of Kei Te Pai, I would like to give a special thanks to Glenn Smith for his generosity for giving our company the advantage of what every Young Enterprise Company needs to do well ... free advertising!

Bayrock/1XX Advertising

Our Managing Director, Samantha Webb
emailed a few radio stations asking for quotes for advertising our company on-air. We received replies from BayRock and 1XX and, because they support the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme, they have been very generous and offered us a free campaign on either BayRock or 1XX to the value of $800. We are all really excited about recording our jingle, and we would like to take this opportunity for thank BayRock and 1XX.

New Zealand Business Week, Palmerston North

Hi, I'm Alicia Gleeson the Financial Director of Kei Te Pai.

I've recently returned to Opotiki after one week in Palmerston North taking part in the International New Zealand Business Week. It was a week full of exciting and educational lectures by promising icons of New Zealand Business. This mixed with team building, time consuming activities ie bowling and creating a competitive stall for the Trade Fair kept us busy from 6am till 11pm each day.

The week proved to be very interesting and informative, and had me mingling with strangers from all over New Zealand, who are now friends. I had to put into practice skills and techniques for a wide range of business attributes. In conclusion, it was a lot of fun, and I am already benefiting from the experience, gaining a small scholarship, heaps of new friends, and clearer opinions about future entrepreneurship. I would thoroughly recommend this for next year to anyone interested in a career in business.

Global Enterprise Challenge 2007

Hey my name is Matthew Cairns from Opotiki College.

I am the Sales Director of Kei Te Pai and was chosen to represent the Eastern Bay of Plenty at the Global Enterprise Challenge. The Global Enterprise Challenge was held on 16-19 June at Massey University on the North Shore, Auckland. The Global Enterprise Challenge is like everything you do at school for Young Enterprise squashed into one day! While attending The Challenge I met loads of cool people and listened to very inspirational and motivational speakers such as Chris Dodds, and Dwayne Smith. I also listened to a speech made by the Leader of the National Party, John Key, and met the Chief Executive of Enterprise New Zealand Donna Dentice.

I believe that the Global Enterprise Challenge is seriously one of the best things that you can do while at high school, in terms of business. I highly recommend that if given the chance to attend future Global Enterprise Challenge's that you take up this very rewarding opportunity.

The presentation of the Oral Business Plan dragged us out of our comfort zone and had us outlining our business to the judges.

Product Launch

Our product launch was also a big hit! We performed skit at the Opotiki College Celebration Night which is held every two years to showcase student success. It was a lot of fun, brought the Kei Te Pai team even closer, and was a great opening to the night. Together we planned and practiced the skit endlessly and even rented a smoke machine to suit the misty, scary effect we were going for. We had the crowd right where we wanted them, laughing and watching our every move, fully understanding the point we were aiming to get across.

Proof of this was an order which arrived just two days later with a cheque for two copies of Kei Te Pai on the Marae. We also were approached by the Mayor of Opotiki, John Forbes who was very interested in our product and offered his help to market it to local government.

Business Card and Business Plan Competitions

Amelia, Samantha and Regan got to work to design our logo and business card for the competition. What a great job they did on the logo - everyone was pleased. We all had input into what should be included on the business card but still, when we were sitting back and congratulating ourselves on a job well done, we discovered we had forgotten to say what our business was! Back to the drawing board . . .

The Business Plan was due in Week 9 (last day of term) we thought . . . Every other year it was apparently due in at this time but at the beginning of Week 8 we discovered that it was due to be with our Regional Coordinator by 3 pm on Friday of Week 8! Amazingly no-one panicked (except our teacher) we were well down the track with everything decided and the market research was coming in steadily so it was just a case of writing it all up!

The whole team pulled together although it wasn't as easy as we first thought to write all the reports. We had the benefit of reading our three previous Young Enterprise teams' Business Plans which was a great help. The three best English students proofread the whole thing and found quite a few errors, funny how you think you are saying one thing but on re-reading find it no longer says what you thought.

Our school's computer system tried its hardest to thwart our efforts when it decided to give up the ghost for two days and then refused to print out our effort in colour so it had to go in black and white which was a disappointment, but I guess it was what we had to say which was the most important. One thing was for sure - we were all very proud of our ideas and the way we just got on with the job. (including our teacher)

Watch this blog space to see how we got on!

E-Day (Enterprise Day)

The first official function of Young Enterprise was the Young Enterprise Training Day. On this day all the teams in our region, the Eastern Bay of Plenty, converge on Whakatane for a day of getting to know each other and getting to grips with "The Business Plan!" There were about eight or nine teams from four schools. Most of the other schools have Young Enterprise as a part of the timetable but for ourselves and Edgecumbe it is an extra curricular experience.

We have the most distance to travel so piled into one of our school vans for the journey to Whakatane. We looked very flash too dressed in our school's No1 uniform which we all like to wear when representing our school at events. (see the photo which shows us in ernest discussion with one of the 'dragons'.) Arriving late, after having got the venue wrong, we soon settled in for an informative day. Many thanks to the ladies at the Whakatane District Council who were so helpful and found the correct venue for us.

We had a fun and informative day on all kinds of topics. Two of the most interesting were about guerrilla marketing and core competency. Two of the most useful parts were our team brainstorming to decide on a product and the session with the 'Dragons'. The 'Dragons' were all business advisers who rotated around asking us questions about our proposed business, answering all our questions and making suggestions for funding etc which may be available. We had arrived at this day thinking that we had just about decided on our product but afterwards, when we returned to school, we actually ended up choosing a product, the idea for which came from this day. Thanks to everyone involved in this day it was most helpful.

Term One - Which product to choose?

During Term One we have been extremely busy! Below is the process we went through to come to our final decision to 'produce a DVD which will demystify and simplify Maori culture and Marae protocol for people who have little or no knowledge of things Maori'.

Our first task was to find a product which we could all be proud of and we investigated many and varied ideas. after brainstorming. Then extensive investigation managed to reduce these products to about six and we finally reduced these to three which were then really thoroughly investigated. The whole team would have been happy to do any one of the final three products which were a DVD travel guide of the Eastern Bay of Plenty with emphasis on, although not exclusively, places, events and experiences of Maori interest, gift baskets of soap etc hand made and including essence of kawakawa leaves, a Maori medicinal remedy and a DVD which will demystify and simplify Marae protocol and Maori culture for those people who have little or no knowledge of 'things Maori'. To help us decide we thought it would be helpful to produce a list of criteria which we wanted our product to achieve for us and this proved to be the factor which decided our final product.

1. Seven of the eight team members are Maori so it was an absolute for the product to promote an aspect of things Maori.
2.It must also be a product which we could produce once and then be able to focus on the marketing and selling of the product with minimum extra production work.
3.It must have little or no competition in our market.
4.There must be a need for it.
5.It must be able to generate a good rate of return on our investment.
6.Most important, it must be fun to do so that we could all give it 100%!

We completed market research sending out 100 questionnaires with 37 being returned. The feedback was really valuable and included ideas we could include on the DVD, one even took the trouble to write a letter to us because they thought the idea was so good and they wanted us to think carefully about the tone and mana which we should create with the video. Only two replies said that they did not want us to contact them with a view to purchase when the product was ready to go to market.
